Clean and Cruelty Free: Indie Lee
Indie and I met at a Brydie Beauty Lab event hosted by Nordstrom, and I've been obsessed with her and her skincare line ever since!
For those of you that don't know Indie Lee is a clean and cruelty-free skincare line that is grounded in nature, supported by science and inspired by life.
Read below for my interview with bad ass boss Indie Lee!!
Was there a particular moment that made you realize this career was for you? Have you always been interested in beauty? Clean Beauty?
Definitely. In 2008 I was diagnosed with a life-threatening brain tumor. I was given six months to live. This wasn't something I had a family history of and I had been living a healthy life- exercising, eating produce from a greenhouse I built in my backyard...so I asked my doctor how this could happen. He said it could be environmentally-derived and asked me a simple question, "Have you thought about what you put on your skin?" It was such an eye-opening moment for me. Since waking up from very risky brain-surgery shortly after the diagnosis, I have made it my mission to educate and empower consumers to make informed decisions when it comes to the products they put on their skin. I have always appreciated beauty (and admittedly love to try all products!), but my experience put everything into a new perspective.
What was the inspiration behind Indie Lee Skincare? How did you come up with the idea?
I started formulating right in my kitchen! My first product creation was the Coconut Citrus Scrub, which is still in the line today. As I was developing the line, I was using ingredients straight from my greenhouse-- lemongrass, lavender, chamomile...I have always been an avid gardener so this was really the foundation of the Indie Lee line.
What advice do you have for other creative women with a passion for entrepreneurship and starting their own business?
You can do it! Don't be intimidated or overwhelmed. Start small with what you know and build on it. Don't be afraid to ask for help and surround yourself with positive people and energy. And take care of yourself along the way- starting your own business can be demanding, so it is important to focus on your wellness in the process. I am a yoga and meditation lover and a strong believer in a weekly bath soak : )
What makes your approach different than other clean beauty products out there?
I don't speak for other brands in the space, but for Indie Lee, it is all about empowerment and education. By arming yourself with knowledge, you will make the best decisions for yourself and your lifestyle.
What’s next for your Indie Lee? Do you have any exciting projects coming up?
So many exciting things in the works for 2018! I can't share too much just yet...but keep an eye out for new products and more fun events!
